It’s so hard to write down the word…cock.

This is not just a fanfic author problem.  This is also a smut author problem.  The idea of using the word penguin and a few others (I can’t recall all of them).  I don’t have much problem with the word cock.  You could use rooster in all of the places you plan to use cock and then do a replace all after you’re done writing.
